How Fear Of A Penalty Might Have Cost The Chiefs The Game

The N.F.L.’s new emphasis on enforcing the roughing the passer rules has really affected many games this season. But on Sunday night, the rule of thumb played a crucial role not due to a recreation-converting penalty, but due to a participant who desired to avoid one.

The Patriots trailed the Chiefs, 33-30, with 5 and a 1/2 minutes left and have been pressing for a landing on the Kansas City four. On third down, Tom Brady went again to bypass, however couldn't find a receiver without delay. Chiefs rookie linebacker Breeland Speaks eluded his blocker and grabbed Brady from behind. It looked like a sack turned into within the offing.

But Speaks inexplicably allow move. Given a second life, Brady, now not known as a speeding quarterback, saved the ball and ran forward for the touchdown. It become his 2nd rushing landing of the yr, after having none in 2016 and ’17. Replays showed Speaks’s disappointment after figuring out his mistake.
If the Patriots had taken a sack on that third-down
